The Kohala Coast region includes an area called Waikoloa in 'South Kohala. Some call this area the gold coast because of the many luxury resorts that have been engraved into ancient lava flows in this area. One of the most beautiful beaches on the island, Hapuna Beach, is also located along this stretch.

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area: Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area is a large park and sandy beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is also located adjacent to the beach. Hāpuna is popular with residents and visitors. This is one of a few other white sand beaches on the west coast of the Big Island. 

Spencer Beach Park: Quiet sandy beach backed by tree-shaded lawns & picnic tables, showers, restrooms & a parking lot. 

Anaehoomaulu Bay: A family-friendly beach.  Perfect for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and paddle boarding.  Great for watching sea turtles.

Beach Course at Waikoloa Beach Resort: Located in Waikoloa. This is a resort golf course that opened in 1981. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Beach Course at Waikoloa Beach Resort measures 6566 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 130 and a 72.7 USGA rating. The course features 3 sets of tees for different skill levels. 

North Course at Mauna Lani Resort: Located on the Kohala Coast.  This is a public golf course that opened in 1988. Designed by Homer Flint, R. F. Cain, and Robin Nelson, North Course at Mauna Lani Resort measures 6913 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 73.2 USGA rating. The course features 5 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are Bahia and the fairways are seashore paspalum, Bahia. 

Waikoloa Village Golf Club:  Located in Waikoloa.  Nestled between the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes.  The golf club has a beautiful and unique location that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The verdant, rolling terrain is dotted with stands of young trees and lakes that were incorporated into the golf course’s design. Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course’s designer, tried to maintain the natural assets of the landscape while adding a few challenges such as fairway bunkers and doglegs. The golf course also features traditional raised greens that are subject to forceful prevailing winds. Although the course is challenging enough for the serious golfer, the relaxed pace and beautiful scenery appeal to players of all skill levels. Locals often consider Waikoloa Village Golf Club one of Hawaii’s best-kept secrets.
